A gorgeously vintage chintz-covered lidded bowl by Empire Ware, dating from the 1940s–1950s. Richly decorated with gold flowers and foliage, this elegant piece captures the charm and glamour of mid-century decorative ceramics.
The bowl stands slightly raised on a circular foot and features a shallow dish form with two graceful gilt handles. The matching lid mirrors the shape of the bowl and is topped with a decorative gold finial. Covering the exterior is an intricate all-over pattern of golden flowers and leaves, complemented by two decorative transfer panels depicting classical Grecian ladies seated and standing amongst trees while playing musical instruments.
The interior is finished in a soft cream glaze with delicate beige speckling. The base bears the backstamp Empire England B 247 P, confirming its origin.
This piece is in good vintage condition with age-related wear consistent with its age. The gilt decoration on the bowl, lid, handles, and finial shows only minimal fading. The gold border surrounding the decorative Grecian panels on the lid displays more noticeable wear, while the transfer images themselves remain bright and attractive. There are no cracks or crazing, and only one tiny chip to the rim of the bowl, which is barely noticeable and more easily felt than seen.
