Striking vintage West African tribal mask, brought back from Africa by family members during the 1950s–1960s. Believed to originate from West Africa, this substantial and beautifully carved mask is a powerful example of traditional African artistry and craftsmanship.
Possibly carved from ebony wood, the mask has a smooth, polished finish and displays a striking contrast between darker wood on one side and lighter, more textured wood on the other. This duality may symbolically represent opposing forces such as life and death, day and night, or balance and harmony, adding depth and intrigue to the piece.
The carving is rich in detail, featuring boldly sculpted lips, nose, eyelids, and brows. A decorative headband of oval-shaped bead-like forms sits above the face, while stylised cornrows rise into an elegant arched headdress. The symmetrical design and strong sculptural lines give the mask an impressive presence whether displayed on a wall or as part of a collection.
A hanging notch is carved into the reverse, allowing for easy wall display.
Condition
The mask is in very good vintage condition, with no cracks or scratches. There are a couple of tiny nicks on the headband, which appear to be part of the original carving process rather than later damage. Please refer to the photographs for details.
