Vintage West African Tribal Mask brought back from Africa by family in the 1950s–60s, this striking tribal mask is believed to originate from West Africa. A heavy, sculptural piece—possibly carved from ebony wood—it beautifully showcases the skill and symbolism of traditional African craftsmanship.
Hand carved to a smooth finish, the mask is designed with rich contrast: dark wood on one side and lighter, grainier wood on the other. This may symbolically represent life and death, or day and night—a powerful visual duality.
The detailing is exceptional:
Boldly sculpted lips, nose, eyelids, and brows
A headband made of oval-shaped 'beads'
Stylized ‘cornrows’ leading into an arched headdress
Symmetrical carving on both sides of the mask
Hanging notch on the reverse for easy wall display
Condition:
Very good vintage condition
No cracks or scratches
A couple of tiny nicks on the headband—likely part of the original carving process
