A rare set of 6 Antique jelly glass in lead crystal glass, possibly Georgian and produced in the early 1820s.
The tall fluted bowl has slice cut panels with a knife cushion stem; the flat base has a polished pontil. All 6 glasses are in good vintage condition with tooling marks, bubble and minor age related marks and scratches, one of the glass' has a tooling dent on the base. See Photo. Lead crystal glass has lovely rainbow refractions and a fine tonal ring.
The jelly glasses used by wealthy people of that era would be displayed on tasers (glass trays) like a cake stand and the wealthier would have them stacked like a pyramid. (Arthur Negus, Guide to British Glass)
The jelly of the time was made from calf's foot and here is a recipe. Calf's Foot Jelly, from Original Recipe in 'English Housewifry' by Elizabeth Moxon, 1764, an interesting book! http://www.foodsofengland.co.uk/calfsfootjelly.htm
A lovely set of 6, which survived 200 years, how many hands has this passed through? The set have minimal varying measurements due to it being handblown.
A wonderful vintage wedding gift for wine, champagne or sherry or as its intended purpose, jelly. A set of 6 for a collector of Georgian glass.
